Disgrace - Part 4

I didn't described the characters except David. That's because the book is write using David's point of view, and all the characters are described with David's point of view. Until there's a dialogue with the character, it's difficult to describe them without being influenced by David. Let's begin the part 4 of Disgrace, by J. M. Coetzee.

The day after the Petrus's party, David is called by Petrus to help with some work in the farm. Petrus pretends that nothing happened, and David don't know how to approach the subject without being rude. Time passes and David decide to directly talk about the guy in the party that was in the Lucy's farm robbery. However, Petrus avoid the subject and makes clear that David will not get any information about that guy. I didn't describe Petrus before, he's African and barely speak english. Has two wifes (one is pregnant), and lives in a section of Lucy's farm. David gave up of talk with Petrus and goes back to the farm.

David is upset, he want justice but even Lucy don't wanna talk about what really happened and Petrus didn't give any help to the case. Lucy and David become less social, they don't chat with each other. And David start to work more with Bev Shaw.

Bev Shaw is an old lady that do voluntary work, treating sick animals from the community. David offered his hand as a way to not become bored with the "Nothing to do" city where the farm is localized. Day after day David feels more close to the animals, mostly the ones that are destined to die. He became sadly and start a sex relationship with Bev Shaw. David think that he's helping her, but in my opinion he's helping himself. He fall in Disgrace.

Lucy and David went to the police department, the policeman talked about some car that was found and it's similar to David's car, but isn't the car that was robbed. All this trip to the city was a way to start the conversation between Lucy and David about what happened. Lucy talked about the rape, and how it was made with hate and how she was frightened. David try to understand and put himself inside Lucy's place, however David think that his place is in the men side, not the victim's. He tries to persuade Lucy to take a vacation and get out of the city and the farm. But Lucy doesn't want it. She doens't want to leave the farm because this will be her defeat.
The dialogue goes on, and David gave up to convince Lucy.

The next chapter talk about David leaving the farm and visit the student (that he abused) family. I already read this chapter, but I will write in the next post. There's 20% of the book to finish and probably I will write in this weekend to in the Monday start another book from my book list.

Sapiens - Part 4

I'm reading Sapiens almost 5 days a week, but not so much as I liked (I'm so into Game of Thrones book). The book is divided in short chapters and these make up a "Part", the currently one talks about money, empires and religion. This post is about money! (I don't know if I'll write about empires or religions). In the previous post about Sapiens' book, I wrote about the beginning of Agricultural Revolution and how our ancestors began to form larger groups of people. There are three universal orders which helped to form groups even bigger; groups that could live under the same set of laws: "The first universal order was Economic : the monetary order. The second one was Political : the imperial order. The third universal order was Religious : the religious orders as Buddhism, Christianity and Islamism." (Adapted from the book - Position 2678 (Kindle)) All these universal orders has a thing in common: A mass of people believing in somethin...

Sapiens - Part 3

Do you like to make plans? Plans for the weekend, for the night or something more specific like plans for your career. It's a good habit to analyze the worst and the best case in your plans. If you don't do that, you should start doing. Our ancestors weren't tidy and they fell into a trap. We always try to improve a task to be easier to do. But, if you don't plan it you probably will face unexpected difficulties. This is what happened with our ancestors when they abandoned the hunter-gatherers style of life, to start an agricultural life.  The wheat's domestication allowed our ancestors to have a static life. They didn't have to walk kilometers to collect corn, fruits or hunt animals to eat, they just needed to manage their plantations.  However, this changed dramatically their diet and concerns. First of all, their feed consisted only in corn and an animal from time to time. Our ancestors could lose all the food by a nature disaster like drought or...
